"I had a very traumatic birth. Afterward, I wanted to create something to help process that trauma, but in the whirlwind of new parenthood, I let it go in vain and pressed forward. As months passed, breastfeeding became another difficult challenge that I was facing, and I didn’t want to forget that too. Breastfeeding and motherhood in general can feel very lonely, but when we open up, we learn that we all share similar experiences. Although our society views those experiences as trivial and ordinary (they aren’t), we deserve to reflect, mourn, and celebrate.
Our stories are often documented through a photojournalistic lens, which is of course beautiful, but deeply personal. People deserve to take up that space, but for 'Half Empty', I wanted to create a body of work that had a blank space. I thought that by arranging familiar, everyday objects, the work would feel open enough to allow other mothers to occupy that space and remember how it all felt. Even though this is my point of view, I wanted to remove myself from the narrative."
